Lash Curl Shapes
Different lash curl shapes for extensions are defined by the type of curl, marked with Latin letters:
- J — a barely noticeable, almost straight curl, giving the most natural effect for your own lashes when extensions are added.
- B — a light, natural curl, giving an effect of more open-looking eyes.
- C and CC — a medium curl, one of the most popular types of synthetic lashes for extensions, giving an effect of defined, wide-open eyes.
- D — a pronounced curl.
- L and L+ — deep curls that create a bold effect. Excellent for women whose natural lashes grow downward, or who have deep-set eyes or drooping upper eyelids.
- U — very curled lashes, creating a “doll-like” look.
Clients can choose lash extensions with a length of 6 to 21mm and a thickness of 0.07 to 0.3mm. The materials used are called “silk” (the finest), “mink” (denser), and “sable” (the thickest). These names are conventional, purely to help technicians tell them apart. In reality, all lash extension materials are synthetic.
Standard lash extensions come in black and brown. However, for a more glamorous effect, you can choose any bold colour: blue, emerald, purple, various shades of red and pink, silver, yellow, orange, and more, as well as a two-tone option — black along the length with coloured tips.
A professional lash artist will always advise the client on the best curl, length, and thickness for her particular case, to highlight her natural beauty and make her eyes more expressive.
Volume of Eyelash Extensions
At the PIED-DE-POULE beauty salon in Kyiv, specialists offer several eyelash extension methods, giving different levels of volume:
- Partial volume. In this case, the technician only extends the outer lashes. Adding a lash strand every 1-2 natural lashes is also an option.
- Classic method. Involves attaching lashes at a 1:1 ratio, meaning the technician glues one synthetic lash to each natural one. This gives the most natural look possible, without using mascara.
- 2D technology. Attaching 2 synthetic lashes to each natural one. This method gives the same natural look as the classic method, but with more density.
- 3D technique. Attaching 3 synthetic lashes to each natural one. This option suits clients who want to emphasise the shape of their eyes.
- 4D method. In this case, the technician glues 4 thin synthetic lashes to each natural lash. The right choice of curl and length achieves a stunning volume effect.
- “Hollywood” (mega volume). A relatively new eyelash extension method, also called “velvet” lashes. Involves attaching 5-10 thin (up to 0.07mm) synthetic hairs.
Effects of Eyelash Extensions
Classic extensions give the visual effect of lightly tinted lashes. This method is chosen by clients who prefer natural shades and the most natural-looking makeup, when the goal is simply to highlight their natural beauty with a subtle accent.
2D extensions also preserve a natural look. But unlike the classic method, the eyelid and brow area becomes more defined in this case, and the lashes look as though they’ve been coated in mascara. These lashes work well for everyday makeup, as well as for business and festive looks.
Many specialists consider 3D extensions the “golden middle ground”. The method achieves thick, full lashes. It’s an excellent choice for evening events, celebrations, photoshoots, and weddings.
The beauty salon recommends Hollywood extensions for clients who want to make a special statement with their eyes and achieve maximum expressiveness in their look.
Lash Touch-Ups
Extended lashes fall out along with your natural lashes — this is completely normal.
The timeframe depends on the individual characteristics of each person and the influence of various negative environmental factors.
On average, synthetic lashes “last” around 6 weeks, but a touch-up may be needed as early as 3-4 weeks after the treatment. The growth rate of lashes varies significantly, so after this period, the lash line can look quite different from one client to another. For example, one client might retain over 50% of their synthetic lashes, while another might only have 25% left.
In the first case, a touch-up is what’s needed. This involves gluing new lashes onto the natural ones, to fill gaps in the lash line and restore length and volume.
If lash loss is significant, however, a touch-up isn’t practical. In that case, a full removal of the remaining hairs and a fresh set of extensions is recommended.
